H.E. Mr. Abdelkader El Ansari, the Moroccan Ambassador to China, began his tenure in February of this year. He has been captivated by Chinese culture since childhood, particularly through his fascination with Chinese Kung Fu films.

"This year marks the 66th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Morocco and China —a number of great cultural significance in China, symbolizing hope" H.E. Ambassador El Ansari remarked during the interview. He expressed optimism that this milestone would bring prosperity to Morocco-China relations.

"Moroccans love Chinese tea"

When discussing China, H.E. Ambassador El Ansari highlighted the Moroccan love for Chinese tea. He pointed out that Moroccan families regularly enjoy Moroccan mint green tea, which is made from Chinese green tea, sugar, and fresh mint leaves. This tea is a staple in Moroccan daily life. Beyond tea, Chinese products are prevalent in Moroccan homes, including electronics, furniture, clothing, and decorations.

Prior to his appointment as Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Ansari served as Director General of the Department of Asian and Oceanian Affairs at the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He frequently interacted with Chinese counterparts and visited China for international conferences. "Every time I visit Beijing, I am impressed by the rapid changes and the efficiency of the Chinese people" he said. He expressed a desire to explore China's diverse climates, landscapes, and cultural traditions, from coastal regions to inland areas, and from urban centers to rural communities.

Since 2016, Morocco has implemented a visa-free policy for Chinese citizens, leading to positive experiences for Chinese tourists.

Mr. Ansari emphasized Morocco's rich cultural diversity and its breathtaking scenery, which includes deserts, beaches, mountains, and golf courses. He hopes the rising trend in Chinese outbound tourism will attract more visitors to Morocco, particularly newlyweds seeking unique wedding destinations.

Enhancing Connectivity

Convenient transportation is essential for fostering cultural and tourism exchanges.

H.E. Mr. Ansari is eager for the introduction of more direct flights between Morocco and China, connecting not only Beijing but also other cities such as Shanghai, Tianjin, Chengdu, and Hong Kong. "Strengthening people-to-people exchanges will further cement the friendship between Morocco and China," he stated.

Chinese Investments in Tangier Tech City

Tangier, Morocco's most economically vibrant city, hosts over 1,100 multinational companies and is home to the "Tangier Tech City " project. H.E. Mr. Ansari explained that this project has significant potential, with investments flowing into sectors such as automotive, aerospace, e-commerce, textile, and agriculture. From 2016 to 2023, Chinese investment in Morocco increased fourfold, with Chinese companies establishing a presence in Tangier Tech City. "Morocco offers great development opportunities and serves as an excellent platform for Chinese businesses and investors. ‘'We are optimistic about the future of Tangier Tech City" H.E. Mr. Ansari said.

"Tangier Tech City " is a key component of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), incorporating the Tangier Free Trade Zone, Tangier Automotive City, and various industrial parks. H.E. Mr. Ansari noted that Chinese companies are particularly interested in Morocco's electric vehicle industry, aligning with Morocco's renewable energy policies, which aim for a 52% renewable power generation rate by 2030. He envisions attracting further investment to Morocco during his tenure.

Morocco as an Investment Hub

H.E. Mr. Ansari highlighted Morocco's strategic location at the northwest of Africa, close to Europe and accessible to the Americas. Morocco's open economy, with free trade agreements with over 50 countries and regions, provides Chinese enterprises with local market access and opportunities for international expansion. Additionally, the 2030 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, offers opportunities for development in infrastructure, healthcare, education, sports, and tourism. "Chinese companies are encouraged to seize these opportunities," H.E. Mr. Ansari said.

Supporting China's Global Initiatives

Morocco is committed to global initiatives proposed by China, including the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. Since the launch of the Global Development Initiative, over 100 countries and several international organizations, including the United Nations, have shown support, with Morocco being a member of the Group of Friends of the Global Development Initiative.

Morocco has actively participated in global governance, such as hosting the 22nd Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP22) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The country has also collaborated on issues like terrorism and migration, seeking global solutions through cooperation.

Looking ahead, H.E. Mr. Ansari expressed confidence in the upcoming 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in China. "Morocco values its friendship with China and looks forward to advancing bilateral cooperation. We wish the 2024 FOCAC Summit great success!" he concluded.
